India may try to sabotage anti-counterfeiting agreement

ACTA, an agreement being negotiated by Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland and the United States, has raised ire in many countries for the secrecy surrounding the negotiations and for suspicion that it will impose tougher standards for intellectual property theft internationally.

Concerns in the United States have centered around the possibility of heightened penalties for digital piracy. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has expressed commitment to seeing the process through, but has indicated that disagreements over enforcement measures have held up a final agreement. The partner countries hope to conclude the process this year.
