Watchdog pokes Obama Administration on transparency
During a conversation with Hillicon Valley, Miller also highlighted progress made on transparency legislation, included the Disclose Act, which she characterized as a response to the Supreme Court’s decision in the Citizens United case. Sunlight pushed for a provision in the bill that would require companies to disclose their campaign donations in real-time online.
Another promising development for the transparency community is the
birth of the bipartisan Congressional Transparency Caucus under the
leadership of Reps. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) The
caucus has 30 members, and Miller predicted it will become
“huge”.
Miller also supports the Public Online Information Act, which she said was conceived onstage during last year’s Personal Democracy Forum. The bill would require any legislation directed at the American Public to be posted online. Another Sunlight project was adopted by Quigley and introduced as the Omnibus Transparency Act, which would significantly increase the amount of information the government is required to post online.
