FAA studies how to integrate drones into national airspace
Currently unmanned aircraft require special authorization or an FAA waiver to fly in the national airspace. They are allowed in some restricted airspace, but with drones increasingly being used for everything from surveillance to border security, the FAA is examining how they may eventually co-exist with commercial air traffic.
The FAA also opened a new lab this week to explore how innovations such as unmanned aircraft and new navigation technologies might influence the future structure and regulation of the national airspace.
