IG says IRS needs better security controls

The IG makes a series of 12 recommendations to improve security, including having managers review their employees’ access privileges and employing configuration management tools across the enterprise. The IRS concurred with 10 of the recommendations but took issue with specific recommendations regarding staffing.

Another IG report issued in April shows that Treasury’s system for automatically processing checks is largely accurate, but not timely enough. The IG said taxpayers missed out on almost $700,000 in interest because the checks were not deposited within 24 hours.
