OMB releases guidance for agencies on cookies, social media

A second set of guidance clarifies the rules under which agencies may use third-party websites, including social networks, to interact with the public. Any information made available via a third-party site must also be accessible on an agency’s public website.

Agencies must also review the privacy policies of sites they use, conduct a privacy impact assessment, and notify the public when third parties may provide the government with personally identifiable information.

“Agencies must go back and review their current relationship with third parties and bring them into compliance with this new guidance,” Fitzpatrick said.
