The 94 investments in 37 states include investments to build out broadband infrastructure and to boost adoption through new computer centers in the inner cities.
“In the urban areas there is generally not as much of a need for new [infrastructure] construction, there is a need for [computer centers] … for people who cannot afford to have a computer in their own home,” said Larry Strickling, administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the Commerce Department’s telecom arm.
Vice President Joe Biden touted the job-creating potential of broadband stimulus in a statement.
The investment announced “will create jobs across the country and expand opportunities for millions of Americans and American companies. In addition to bringing 21st century infrastructure to underserved communities and rural areas, these investments will begin to harness the power of broadband to improve education, healthcare, and public safety,” he said, calling the awards “another great example” of how the Recovery Act is creating jobs.
The Recovery and Reinvestment Act gave the Commerce and Agriculture Departments the responsibility for doling out nearly $7 billion in broadband grants and loans.
