WikiLeaks releases CIA paper
WikiLeaks announced Tuesday night on Twitter that it would release a leaked CIA paper sometime Wednesday. (See below for update on contents of leak itself.)
The tweet from @wikileaks gave few details:
WikiLeaks to release CIA paper tomorrow.
WikiLeaks, a website that shares leaked documents while protecting the anonymity of the leakers, became famous and a target of criticism after releasing thousands of Afghanistan war documents last month.
The Afghan War Diary, as WikiLeaks labeled the collection, painted a demoralizing view of the Afghanistan War, although many experts said they were not revelatory.
After posting the documents, WikiLeaks came under fire from the Obama administration, particularly the Defense Department, for the release.
“Those documents should be returned,” Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said last week. “There should be no further posting of these classified documents, and those that have been posted should be removed.”
In issuing the massive set of documents last month, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange partnered with mainstream news organizations, including the New York Times, to contextualize the content of the papers.
UPDATE:
WikiLeaks released the CIA document on Wednesday afternoon. Here is the link to the document.
The explanation from Wikileaks:
The document “looks at what will happen if it is internationally understood that the United States is an exporter of terrorism; ‘Contrary to common belief, the American export of terrorism or terrorists is not a recent phenomenon, nor has it been associated only with Islamic radicals or people of Middle Eastern, African or South Asian ethnic origin.”
According to WikiLeaks, the report concludes that “foreign perceptions of the US as an ‘Exporter of Terrorism’ together with US double standards in international law, may lead to noncooperation in renditions (including the arrest of CIA officers) and the decision to not share terrorism related intelligence with the United States.”
