Upton rejects search-neutrality regs

This climate has spurred Google to increase its effort to dispel interest in search neutrality regulations. Such rules would ensure the company does not bury or hide competitors in its search rankings. 

Google official Matt Cutts undertook a blitz of meetings with Hill staffers and federal regulators to explain how search works and why regulations are unnecessary. The company has acknowledged that interest in search regulation has risen over the past year. 

But Upton’s comments made it plain that Energy and Commerce Republicans are not interested in regulating Google. 

“Let me be clear: I do not believe we should be regulating the Internet,” he said. “But if we follow the FCC’s logic, the agency would ultimately be regulating Google and any number of other Internet companies.”
