Noncontroversial tech cuts in GOP stopgap measure
The measure cuts $19 million from the Commerce Department devoted to converting public television stations to digital. President Obama suggested the termination in his budget request.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting would lose $50 million if the measure passes. CPB doles out cash to NPR and PBS. The language would terminate funding that stations receive when public donations are low, a cut included in Senate Democrats’ most recent proposal and in President Obama’s budget request.
The bill cuts $200 million from the Social Security Administration devoted to information technology, which the Senates Democrats also proposed cutting.
The House is set to vote on the measure on Tuesday. If it does not move forward, the government would shut down after March 18.
