Survey: Most people don’t care about their local paper
The Pew Internet and American Life Project released a study Monday on how mobile devices are changing local news.
Almost half of Americans use their cell phones and tablets to get local news. Pew points out, however, that this doesn’t mean news organizations are making money off their reporting.
“Many news organizations are looking to mobile platforms, in particular mobile apps, to provide new ways to generate subscriber and advertising revenues in local markets,” said Lee Rainie, director of the project. “The survey suggests there is a long way to go before that happens.”
That’s in part because only 1 percent of Americans are getting local news using apps, where papers can place their ads.
