The bill puts the Department of Justice in charge of enforcement but empowers State Attorney Generals to target violators as well. In addition, consumers whose location data was misused may sue for damages.
The legislation could run into opposition from the Senate Commerce Committee, which has pushed for the Federal Trade Commission to have a greater role in policing consumers’ privacy online.
