California goes after ‘revenge porn’ site

The California Department of Justice arrested a man Tuesday for operating a “revenge porn” website.

Revenge porn sites publish explicit photos, typically provided by scorned lovers of the photos’ subjects.

{mosads}According an announcement from California Attorney General Kamala Harris’s office, a California man — Kevin Christopher Bollaert, 27, of San Diego — is facing charges for operating ugotposted.com, which published explicit photos of individuals without the subject’s permission, accompanied by their name, location, age and a link to their Facebook profile.

California law prohibits obtaining such personal information and using it to harass state residents. 

Through a separate site, changemyreputation.com, Bolleart would allegedly respond to takedown requests from the photos’ subjects and offer to remove the explicit pictures for as much as $350, according to the announcement

“This website published intimate photos of unsuspecting victims and turned their public humiliation and betrayal into a commodity with the potential to devastate lives,” Harris said in a statement.

“Online predators that profit from the extortion of private photos will be investigated and prosecuted for this reprehensible and illegal Internet activity.”
