Facebook board needs to add women before going public, new campaign says
Facebook’s board of directors is attracting attention from women’s groups, and those groups don’t like what they see. Ultraviolet, a women’s group whose self-described mission is “fighting to expand women’s rights and combat sexism everywhere,” announced a new campaign — “Face It” — to demand that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg appoint at least one woman to the company’s board before its stock begins public trading.
{mosads}While 58 percent of registered Facebook users are women, and, as Ultraviolet notes, women are responsible for 62 percent of sharing on the site. The social networking giant, however, doesn’t have a single woman on its board, the group said, even though COO Sheryl Sandberg is among the most powerful women in technology.
This isn’t only in conflict with Facebook’s mission, the group says in a letter released to drum up support, but it’s bad for business. The group wants letter recipients to sign a petition for delivery to Facebook and the media.
A Facebook spokesman told The Hill that Facebook had no official comment on the matter.
