Facebook pushing donations to fight Ebola
Facebook is seeking to increase donations to fight Ebola.
Facebook will place a donate button at the top of users’ news feeds for the next week, encouraging them to donate to one of three charities working in West Africa to stop the spread of the virus, the company announced Thursday.
{mosads}The message will also allow users to share that they donated.
Last month, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife donated $25 million to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Foundation to help fight the spread.
People will be able to donate to the International Medical Corps, the Red Cross and Save the Children.
The company will also target users’ feeds in neighboring regions of Africa to provide information about Ebola symptoms and treatment. It is also partnering with NetHope to set up 100 terminals that provide broadband and telephone service.
More than 13,000 cases of Ebola have been reported so far, with 4,818 reported deaths.
The vast majority of cases have centered in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Four reported cases have been detected in the United States, resulting in one death. All but one were from aid workers.
On Wednesday, the Obama administration requested more than $6 billion in additional funds to fight Ebola.
