Zuckerberg tells Muslims on Facebook: You are always welcome here
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday vowed this his company will “create a peaceful and safe environment” for Muslim users amid the raging political debate in the United States over terrorism and Islam.
“I want to add my voice in support of Muslims in our community and around the world,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post. “If you’re a Muslim in this community, as the leader of Facebook I want you to know that you are always welcome here and that we will fight to protect your rights and create a peaceful and safe environment for you.”
{mosads}His comments came after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump called for the United States to close its borders to all Muslims, a proposal that has drawn widespread criticism, including from Democrats and fellow Republicans.
“Donald Trump, you know, he does traffic in prejudice and paranoia,” Hillary Clinton said Wednesday. “It’s not only shameful, it’s dangerous.”
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) also condemned Trump’s plan.
“This is not who we are as a party or a country,” Ryan said Tuesday.
But Trump is standing by the proposal, saying the nation has to do something to combat terrorist groups such as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
“It’s not about religion. This is about safety,” Trump said.
