Progressives try to tie Google to Trump with new Chrome extension

A progressive group is using a new Chrome extension to criticize Google for its partnership with the Republican National Convention.

UltraViolet Action released the browser extension Wednesday that modifies Google’s name in articles and other pages online with various playful phrases tying it to Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president.

{mosads}A headline about Google might now include the parenthetical “(low key, they’re cool with Trump)” or a clause informing readers that Google “supports Trump by the way.” It also adds jokes related to instances of Trump’s name.

The group says the extension will add Trump’s distinctive hair to the Google logo, though The Hill was not able to see that feature in action. 

Google has not taken a position on the presidential election but has said it will provide the official livestream for the GOP convention in July. The humorous extension is part of a larger attempt by progressive groups to put pressure on tech companies over their sponsorship of the Republican convention where Trump could be nominated.

“With the most racist, violent, and hateful candidate in recent history on such a huge platform, Google will basically be the “Livestreaming Hate Provider,” UltraViolet says on the web page for the extension.

Other tech companies have said they are sticking with the convention in some form. Microsoft has said it will provide both Democrats and Republicans with software services for their conventions, and AT&T will be the “official communications, video and technology provider” for the Republicans. Xerox said it will once again donate to the convention, as well.
