Microsoft CEO visits China

Microsoft’s CEO is visiting China this week, according to Reuters, as China continues to probe the tech giant for antitrust violations in what some have called an act of protectionism.

Satya Nadella plans to meet with government officials while in Beijing, the report said. Nadella will also appear at a business school and do some work with developers.

Many in the United States see China’s aggressive pursuit of Microsoft as symptomatic of a larger protectionist streak that China has toward foreign tech companies.

President Obama said last year that he had personally spoken to China’s president about the issue, as well as other laws tech groups say hurt foreign companies.

“We have made it very clear to them that this is something they are going to have to change if they are to do business with the United States,” Obama told Reuters at the time.

Nadella isn’t the only tech CEO to head to China in recent months.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was there earlier this month, looking not only to boost interest in a valuable market but also to deal with a regulatory headache of his own. China recently shut down the iBooks store as well as the iTunes Movies product.
