Uber offers free rides to LGBT centers

Uber will offer free rides to locations of significance to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community around the country this weekend, a week after a gunman killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando.

Customers will be able to access two credits each, worth up to $20, when traveling to locations in several cities such as LGBT bars and clubs, as well as community centers and institutions.

{mosads}“Like people across the world, we were deeply shocked and saddened by the recent murders at a gay nightclub in Orlando,” the company said in one blog post. “The world is a brighter and better place when we are all free to be ourselves. And we want to bring people together, no matter who you are or where you’re from.”

In Washington, locations include Nellie’s bar and Cobalt nightclub along with institutions serving the capital’s LGBT community, like Whitman Walker health clinic, Casa Ruby and the DC Center. The company is offering the credits in 39 other cities in the United States and Canada.

Last Sunday’s shooting at Pulse nightclub was the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil since Sept. 11, 2001, and the nation’s bloodiest mass shooting.

The company is not offering the discounts in Orlando, but Recode reported that Uber is offering free rides to family members of the shooting victims.
