Amazon will not donate to conventions

Amazon won’t donate to either the Republican or Democratic party conventions next month but will offer coverage of the events on two streaming video platforms, the company said on Tuesday.

“We are not making a monetary donation to either convention, but will be providing convention coverage for our Fire TV and Twitch customers,” said a spokesperson.

{mosads}Twitch is a video game streaming platform Amazon acquired in 2014, and the Fire TV is streaming hardware sold by the company.

The company’s plans were first reported by Politico.

Amazon has never donated to a convention before, according to the spokesperson. But this year’s decision is likely to draw more attention because of the way presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has sparred with Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos.

“Every hour, we’re getting calls from reporters from The Washington Post asking ridiculous questions, and I will tell you, this is owned as a toy by Jeff Bezos, who controls Amazon,” Trump said in May. He also claimed that Bezos uses his prominence in Washington to lessen Amazon’s tax payments.

Bezos responded that it was “critical that we be able to carefully examine our leaders.”

Trump’s campaign revoked the Post’s press credentials earlier this month.

The company spokesperson said that its decision was unrelated to Trump’s attacks on Bezos, who bought the Post in 2013.

Scrutiny has also been increasing for technology companies weighing whether to participate in the Republican National Convention because of Trump’s statements deriding some immigrants and his proposed ban on Muslim immigrants coming into the United States. Progressive groups have been pushing a wide range of companies not to sponsor the Republican event.

Some have agreed with the advocates. Apple is reportedly not donating to the Republican convention, despite the fact that CEO Tim Cook has raised money for Republicans. Hewlett Packard also said it would not donate to the convention.

Other companies, including Google and Facebook, will keep their presence at the convention in spite of the pressure.
