Internet Archive launches library of Trump videos

The Internet Archive, an online repository, on Thursday launched an archive specifically for President-elect Donald Trump’s televised statements and interviews.

The Trump Archive houses more than 520 hours of video of the president-elect, including more than 700 televised speeches, interviews and debates, according to an announcement on the Internet Archive’s website.

More than 500 of the Trump videos link to fact checks evaluating the veracity of the statement in question.

In the announcement, Nancy Watzman, the managing editor of the Internet Archive’s television section, said that the archive is inviting journalists and researchers to help suggest additions to the online Trump library.

The site is similar to the recently launched Factbase, which is archiving all of Trump’s public statements.

The Internet Archive is known for its Wayback Machine, which preserves web pages so that cached sites can be viewed even if they are taken down.

Following Trump’s election in November, the site announced that it would be backing up its database in Canada to prepare for the possibility that Trump would crack down on free speech. In a blog post announcing the move, the site said that Trump could threaten an open internet.

“For us, it means keeping our cultural materials safe, private and perpetually accessible. It means preparing for a Web that may face greater restrictions.”
