Poll: Most in US favor new limits on surveillance

{mosads}The study found a lack of trust in the official government position on the anti-terror surveillance programs. Only 22 percent said they believe the government uses the data only for anti-terror purposes, while 70 percent said they believe the information is being used for other purposes as well.

Sixty-three percent of respondents said they believe the government is accessing the contents of conversations while only 18 percent said they believe that officials are collecting only “metadata,” such as phone numbers and email addresses.

The poll found that 27 percent of people believe that the government has listened in on their phone calls or read their emails.

The poll was conducted in the days before the House narrowly defeated a proposal to limit the NSA’s phone data collection program.
