Twitter aims to crack down on abuse

Responding to an outcry in the United Kingdom over online threats against women, Twitter updated its rules against abusive behavior on Saturday.

The social media company revised its rules to clarify that it does “not tolerate abusive behavior.”

{mosads}It also added an in-Tweet button to allow users to report abuse on the latest version of its app for Apple devices. The feature, which allows users to file a report without having to go to the help center, will be available on Android and Twitter.com next month, the company said. 

“We want people to feel safe on Twitter, and we want the Twitter Rules to send a clear message to anyone who thought that such behaviour was, or could ever be, acceptable,” Twitter wrote in a blog post.

The move comes after a wave of rape and bomb threats made on Twitter against women political activists and journalists. 

More than 120,000 signed a petition on Change.org calling on Twitter to add a abuse reporting button to tweets.
