Report: Snowden documents detail U.S. cyber offensives

U.S. intelligence services carried out 231 offensive cyber-operations in 2011, The Washington Post reports in a story based on documents obtained from former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

The disclosure “provides new evidence that the Obama administration’s growing ranks of cyberwarriors infiltrate and disrupt foreign computer networks,” the Post reports.

Their story also describes a covert cyber program that’s code-named GENIE, under which U.S. specialists break into foreign networks and put them under “surreptitious U.S. control.”

“The documents provided by Snowden and interviews with former U.S. officials describe a campaign of computer intrusions that is far broader and more aggressive than previously understood,” the paper reports.
