US asked for data on 40,000 Yahoo users

{mosads}The statistics cover both requests from local police departments and national security requests from the FBI and National Security Agency. Yahoo emphasized that it complies only with valid legal demands.

The United States easily led the world in Yahoo data requests, ahead of the United Kingdom (1,709 requests), Italy (2,637 requests) Germany (4,295 requests), France (1,855 requests) and Taiwan (1,942 requests). 

Google was the first company to begin regularly publishing information about its compliance with government data requests, followed by Twitter, Microsoft and Facebook.

“Democracy demands accountability, and accountability requires transparency,” Ron Bell, Yahoo’s general counsel, said in a statement. “We hope our report encourages governments around the world to more openly share information about the requests they make for users’ information.”
