Trump to meet with Bill Gates on Monday
President Trump is meeting with Microsoft founder Bill Gates on Monday.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer announced the meeting on Thursday at his daily press briefing but did not provide any other details.
The two previously met in December at Trump Tower.
After the meeting, Gates told reporters that the two had a “good conversation” and had discussed “innovation, how it can help in health, education, the impact of foreign aid and energy, and a wide-ranging conversation about power of innovation.”
During his campaign, Trump had mentioned Gates as one of the business leaders he would consult if elected.
“We have to go see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what’s happening. We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that Internet up in some way,” Trump had said about turning to the tech industry to help prevent terrorist groups from recruiting through social media.
{mosads}But Gates, like many other tech industry leaders, has at times been critical of Trump.
A prominent philanthropist, Gates in June said that Trump “hasn’t been known” for his charitable giving.
In an interview with earlier this month, Gates said that he “will continue making the case to the administration and to Congress that it’s good for the United States and good for the world to continue our leadership on [clean energy and foreign aid].”
Earlier Thursday, the White House unveiled Trump’s first proposed budget, which would see sharp cuts to the State Department and Environmental Protection Agency.
“The foundation has a long history of working with officials on both sides of the aisle to pursue shared priorities like global health and development and domestic education,” The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation said in a statement Thursday about the upcoming meeting.
“Bill will meet with congressional leaders and members of the administration to discuss the tremendous progress made to-date in these areas and the critical and indispensable role that the United States has played in achieving these gains.”
