Former Uber public relations chief joins Facebook

Uber’s former top communications executive is joining Facebook.

Rachel Whetstone headed Uber’s communications and public policy team until she resigned in April, amid a mass shake-up that also prompted the resignation of CEO Travis Kalanick.

Whetstone will be Facebook’s vice president of communications for Whatsapp, Instagram and Messenger.

The news was first reported by Recode and confirmed to The Hill by a Facebook spokeswoman.

{mosads}“It’s a real privilege to be joining the Facebook family,” Whetstone said in a statement. “Products like WhatsApp have become an important part of my life — making it so much easier to stay in touch with my own family and friends.”

Whetstone stepped down from Uber in April while the company was reeling from a series of controversies, including allegations of widespread sexual harassment in the workplace. That turmoil led to an exodus of top leaders.

In June, Kalanick also resigned.

Whetstone joined Uber in 2015 after 10 years as a top communications official at Google.
