Spotify deleting white supremacist music

Spotify is deleting music from white supremacist artists after a website listed a number hate music bands available on the platform.

“We are glad to have been alerted to this content — and have already removed many of the bands identified today, whilst urgently reviewing the remainder,” a Spotify spokesperson said in a statement Thursday.

On Monday, Digital Music News published a blog post listing what it identified as 37 white supremacist bands on the music-streaming platfomr. According to the post, the bands were identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center in a 2014 report aimed at pressuring iTunes into removing them from its marketplace.

Spotify said that it provides a platform for hundreds of thousands of music producers and aggregators who “are at first hand responsible for the content they deliver.”

“Illegal content or material that favors hatred or incites violence against race, religion, sexuality or the like is not tolerated by us,” the spokesperson said. “Spotify takes immediate action to remove any such material as soon as it has been brought to our attention.”

After a white supremacist demonstration in Charlottesville, Va., turned deadly over the weekend, technology companies have been severing ties with hate groups that use their platforms.

Pandora, one of Spotify’s top competitors, also said in a statement that it had been cracking down on hate music.

“We take action to remove content of this nature from Pandora,” a spokesman said. “We removed much of this content in 2014 and are in the process of removing additional material that’s been flagged now.”
