Twitter unveils schedule of updates to curb abuse

Twitter has published a calendar of planned updates to enhance platform safety that it will roll out over the next several months.

The schedule details a timeline of features and changes, including formally banning “unwanted sexual advances” and “condoning and glorifying violence” in its user policy and banning “hateful imagery,” “hate avatars” and “hateful display names.”

Twitter says that this is the first time it has been this transparent with its safety features and is doing so to “build trust” with users.

“This makes us feel uncomfortable because it’s a work in progress & rough, but it’s the right thing to do: we believe showing our thinking and work in real-time will help build trust,” CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted on Wednesday before the company released the calendar.

The company been criticized over the past several years for not doing enough to crackdown on abuse and problematic content. Twitter has made strides in stamping out pro-terrorist communities, but many users complain that abuse still runs rampant, particularly for women.

“This won’t be a quick or easy fix, but we’re committed to getting it right. Far too often in the past we’ve said we’d do better and promised transparency but have fallen short in our efforts,” Twitter wrote in a statement.
