Twitter introduces ‘Lite’ version in 24 countries
Twitter is introducing a new “Lite” version of its app in 24 counties after testing it out in the Philippines, according to TechCrunch.
The app is designed to run a more streamlined mobile version of Twitter, making it more accessible in countries where data plans and phone storage are costly and limited.
Twitter Lite will be “more resilient on unreliable mobile networks,” the company said.
{mosads}Some of the countries Twitter Lite will be released in include Algeria, Mexico and Malaysia.
Twitter reportedly saw a resounding 50 percent increase in tweets during its testing of the Lite app in the Philippines. The larger rollout of Twitter Lite could help the company expand its market share across the world in countries where mobile broadband is shakier than in countries like the U.S.
Eighty percent of Twitter’s 330 million monthly users are based outside of the U.S. If Twitter Lite can show similar success in countries besides the Philippines, it could throw the company a lifeline even as Wall Street pressures the company to beef up its user growth.
Facebook in 2015 introduced its own similar product, Facebook Lite, to grow its presence in markets with less stable mobile internet.
