Google to use Waymo self-driving trucks in Atlanta

Waymo, a sibling company of Google, said on Friday that it will start a self-driving truck pilot program in Atlanta to service Google’s data centers.

The company said in a blog post that the autonomous vehicles will still have drivers in their cabs to monitor them.

{mosads}“Atlanta is one of the biggest logistics hubs in the country, making it a natural home for Google’s logistical operations and the perfect environment for our next phase of testing Waymo’s self-driving trucks,” Waymo said in the post.

The announcement comes the same week that Uber said its self-driving trucks will begin operating on Arizona highways.

Both moves are only the latest steps in the advancement of self-driving car technology. Earlier this year, Waymo announced that it would begin driving fully autonomous cars in Phoenix. Other companies have since made similar announcements.

Apple and Lyft, as well as car companies such as Ford, Tesla and General Motors, are also developing self-driving technology to transport both cargo and passengers.
