Video released by police shows view from inside self-driving car before fatal crash

Police in Arizona released video footage on Wednesday taken in a self-driving Uber vehicle that struck and killed a pedestrian this week.

The video shows a woman walking with a bike in a crosswalk at night into the test SUV’s path, coming into view of the vehicle’s headlights just seconds before the collision, which is not shown in the video.

Elaine Herzberg, 49, was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she died from her injuries. Her death marks the first recorded lethal incident involving self-driving vehicle technology, which Uber and other companies have been testing in the U.S. and Canada.

The incident caused the ride-hailing company to halt its testing of the vehicle technology in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto.

Another video shows a vehicle operator in the driver’s seat, who had been looking down for most of the car’s trip while monitoring the autonomous vehicle, look up just before the crash on the four-lane highway.

The incident is now under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
