Hillary Clinton joins former diplomats calling for international cooperation to minimize AI risks

Hillary Clinton is joining a group of former diplomats calling for international cooperation to minimize the risks of artificial intelligence (AI).

The Aspen Ministers Forum, a branch of the nonprofit organization the Aspen Institute, issued a statement on Tuesday detailing their growing concerns with the risks of AI, calling the issue as “one of the most important policy challenges of our time.”

“Much has been written and debated on the short and long-term risks of the increasing capabilities of artificial intelligence,” the forum said in its statement. “As the technologies evolve and permeate all aspects of society, we feel it is important to move quickly to ensure international cooperation on what will be one of the most important policy challenges of our time.”

Clinton, who served as secretary of State during the Obama administration, is a member of the Aspen Ministers Forum, founded by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to bolster diplomatic ties between the U.S. and the European Union.

The group issued a slew of recommendations to address international AI governance, including the creation of an international agency, protection from AI-generated disinformation and the development of national regulatory regimes that would be coordinated internationally. The group also called for negotiations on a legally binding instrument to govern the security-related applications of AI software.

The group’s statement said it is time for all countries to come together to address AI.

The statement comes days after President Biden signed an executive order on AI, which focuses on seizing on the emerging technology and managing its risks.
