British watchdog investigating Google takeover of data company
Britain’s competition watchdog launched an investigation Tuesday into Google’s acquisition of a data analytics company.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) began the inquiry into the merger between Google and Looker Data Sciences Monday, according to an updated announcement.
The watchdog will decide on Feb. 13 whether to pursue a more in-depth investigation.
A Google spokesperson said in a statement “the acquisition of Looker has received regulatory approval in the U.S. and Austria and we continue to make progress with regulators in the U.K.”
This month CMA said it was looking into whether the acquisition would result in less competition in the British market, according to AP.
Google announced in June it would acquire Looker for $2.6 billion.
