Ex-Deadspin staff to write for temporary blog Super Bowl weekend

A number of former Deadspin staffers are posting to a temporary blog during Super Bowl weekend, months after the staff resigned en mass from the sports news outlet.

The “Unnamed Temporary Sports Blog Dot Com” will feature “all of your favorite sports bloggers,” according to a mock-Q&A post with former Deadspin features editor Tom Ley. 

“Well, maybe not all of them, but at least the ones who are currently unemployed due to their recent decision to detonate their own careers,” he wrote. “We’re all feeling great and ready to blog.”

“At the conclusion of this three-day period, we will vanish,” he added.

Barry Petchesky, David Roth and Drew Magary will also participate in the blog that is sponsored by the password management company Dashlane, The Daily Beast reported a person familiar with the project said.

The blog comes after Deadspin had a tumultuous fall with its staff resigning over disagreements with owner G/O Media and investor Great Hill Partners, who instructed the staff to “stick to sports” in its coverage. The website has not produced new content since November. 

The sponsor tech company Dashlane referenced the Deadspin debacle in a statement shown on the site, saying “Dashlane is proud to sponsor Unnamed Temporary Sports Blog Dot Com, because we’re tired of big companies ruining good websites.”

The Hill reached out to G/O Media and Great Hill Partners for comment.
