TikTok updates automated takedown system

TikTok is bringing a new system to the U.S. and Canada for automatically removing videos that violate platform policies. 

The automatic system will be used primarily for violations of TikTok’s policies on minor safety, sexual activities, violence, illegal activity and regulated goods, the company said in a blog post. 

“While no technology can be completely accurate in moderating content, where decisions often require a high degree of context or nuance, we’ll keep improving the precision of our technology to minimize incorrect removals,” TikTok noted in a blog post

TikTok has been testing the changes in other markets, and says that tests show the false positive rate for removals is five percent.

Creators will continue to be able to appeal removals.

TikTok is also updating the way it notifies users about policy violations.

Moving forward, violation history will play into what action is taken and users will be alerted in-app about rule breaking content. Repeated violations could result in account suspension or bans.

“People spend substantial time and energy creating content for TikTok, and it’s critical to us that our systems for moderating content be accurate and consistent,” the company said.
