Walmart opening delivery service to other retailers

Walmart has announced a new delivery service that will send other retail competitors’ products to customers.

The company announced the creation of the new business line, called “Walmart GoLocal,” in a news release on Tuesday.

Walmart GoLocal is an add-on to the retailer’s delivery network, which started in 2018 and services more than 500 cities across the country and provides access to 20 million households in the market, according to The Associated Press.

Walmart said its new venture will help businesses to grow using the retailer’s delivery capabilities and nationwide coverage, and will expand to offer additional services. The new delivery service also has established contractual agreements with national and enterprise retailers as well, according to the press release.

“We’ve worked hard to develop a reliable last mile delivery program for our customers,” a Walmart senior vice president, Tom Ward, said in the statement.

“Now, we’re pleased to be able to use these capabilities to serve another set of customers, local merchants. Be it delivering goods from a local bakery to auto supplies from a national retailer, we’ve designed Walmart GoLocal to be customizable for merchants of all sizes and categories so they can focus on doing what they do best, leaving delivery speed and efficiency to us.”

This comes as the Arkansas-based retail giant is setting up to compete with companies such as DoorDash, Uber and Amazon in delivery services, the AP noted.

The new venture comes after the retailer recently announced plans to offer technical support “to help other businesses navigate their own digital transformation,” Walmart added.
