Zuckerberg announces Nick Clegg will lead Meta on policy issues

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Wednesday that Nick Clegg will lead the company’s policy efforts as president of global affairs.

In his announcement shared on Facebook, Zuckerberg said Clegg will “lead and represent us for all of our policy issues globally.”

“Nick will now lead our company on all our policy matters, including how we interact with governments as they consider adopting new policies and regulations, as well as how we make the case publicly for our products and our work,” Zuckerberg’s statement said.

“Our company is at an important inflection point and we face numerous opportunities – and challenges – ahead,” Clegg said in response, adding that he was “hugely looking forward” to playing a role in the societal debate to which Meta’s products contribute.

Clegg joined the company, then known as Facebook, in 2018 to run its global policy organization. According to Bloomberg, he led the establishment of the company’s independent oversight board to review content moderation decisions and the process of reviewing and ultimately suspending former President Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Clegg served as deputy prime minister of the United Kingdom from 2010 to 2015.

“The next few years will be a crucial time for our company and our industry as new rules for the internet are written all over the world, and as we set out on our journey to help build the metaverse,” Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said in a post. “Nick’s calm and principled leadership will continue to be an asset for Meta in the months and years to come.”
