NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo targets bus companies
{mosads} The closure will remove about 100 unsafe buses from the road, the Cuomo administration said. The news quickly received the support of New York Sen. Charles Schumer (D), who has called for bus companies to display their safety ratings on their vehicles like restaurants currently do.
“Recent NYS bus accidents are a call to action, am working on fed steps,” Schumer said in a posting on his Twitter stream Tuesday.
After a series of crashes in the Northeast this spring led to more than 20 deaths, other members of Congress have been pushing for legislation to increase bus safety. Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) have filed a bill to require seat belts and stronger windows on buses.
Both chambers have held hearings on bus safety recently.
