Aerospace lobby to argue against supercommittee defense cuts

{mosads}In an effort to compel lawmakers on the 12-member super committee to make proposals in time for an end-of-the-year vote in Congress, the deal that created the panel includes a trigger that would cut automatically cut $600 billion in defense spending.

At its news conference Wednesday, the AIA will argue that another round of cuts, on top of the $350 billion
already included in the original deal to raise the federal debt ceiling,
will have “long-term costs…on the defense capabilities, industrial
workforce, and America’s legacy of innovation in space and civil
aviation leadership.”

The committee is composed of Democratic Sens. Max Baucus (Mont.), John Kerry (Mass.) and Patty Murray (Wash.); Senate Republicans Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Rob Portman (Ohio) and Pat Toomey (Pa.); Republicans Reps. Fred Upton (Mich.), Dave Camp (Mich.) and Jeb Hensarling (Texas); and Democratic Reps. Jim Clyburn (S.C.), Chris Van Hollen (Md.) and Xavier Becerra (Calif.).
