Birmingham, Ala., airport evacuated
Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport was evacuated and flights were diverted late Sunday due to a suspicious package.
The airport said a threat was received at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time. Officials said the airport was secured and operations were resuming at approximately 6:30 p.m.
Airport officials and law enforcement officers responded, according to the airport’s Facebook page.
The FBI told The Birmingham News that its bomb technicians and Joint Terrorism Task Force worked with the Birmingham Police Department and the airport authority “to resolve the situation.”
Bill Keller, a passenger on a flight from Atlanta, told the newspaper that the flight’s pilot indicated there had been a bomb threat at the airport.
The control tower was also evacuated, according to reports.
