Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) called on Monday for the Obama administration to conduct a safety review of New York commuter rail trains after a weekend accident on the state’s Metro North system.
Gillibrand tweeted that Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) should evaluate the trains that are used by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which runs the Metro North and other commuter railways in New York.
“In wake of yesterday’s train derailment, I’ve urged @USDOTFRA to conduct evaluation of @MTA commuter trains & take steps to improve safety,” Gillibrand wrote.

The Metro North crash involved a train that derailed in the Bronx on its way to New York City from Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The crash was the second major Metro North accident this year, following a collision of two trains in Connecticut in May.
The Sunday crash resulted in four deaths and more than 60 injuries. Officials said the trains was carrying approximately 150 passengers at the time of its derailment.
