2,282 flights canceled during post Super Bowl-snow storm

Airlines canceled 2,282 flights on the day after the Super Bowl because of a snow storm that struck the region that hosted the game, the northeast U.S.

Newark, N.J’s Liberty International Airport led the nation in cancelled incoming and outbound flights, with 283 and 269 respectively, according to the website FlightAware.com.

New York’s LaGuardia Airport was the runner-up with 233 incoming and 231 outgoing flight cancellations.

The cancelations marred a Super Bowl that was played under clear weather conditions after weeks of speculation about the possibility of inclement weather during the game, which was the first outdoor “cold weather” championship game in years for the National Football League.

Airline service was beginning to return to normal Tuesday, with only 656 flights canceled by mid-morning.

More than 2,500 flights were facing delays on Tuesday though, according to the airline tracking site.
