Foxx to Super Bowl watchers: ‘Fans don’t let fans drive drunk’
Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx is warning football fans not to drink and drive on Sunday, the day of the Super Bowl.
“My team won’t be in the Super Bowl, but I will be watching,” Foxx, who is a fan of the eliminated Carolina Panthers, said in statement.
“If you’re hosting a Super Bowl party or out watching the game with friends, remember that fans don’t let fans drive drunk,” Foxx continued. “Always have a plan to get home safely.”
{mosads}Foxx said he was issuing the warning because there were 10,076 fatal car accidents in 2013 that involved a drunk driver, according to Transportation Department statistics.
Newly inaugurated National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator Mark Rosekind said that 56 percent of the 2013 drunk driver crashes occurred on weekends.
“If you choose to drink, please make the winning decision that could save your life or the lives of others — find a sober driver to take you home,” he said in statement. “Each life lost because of drunk driving is preventable, so please designate a driver.”
The DOT is recommending that Super Bowl party attendees identify a designated driver before the start of Sunday’s game between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.
The agency also suggests that people who are hosting Super Bowl parties stop serving alcohol to guests at the end of the championship game’s third quarter and instead being offering coffee and dessert.
