6K flights canceled amid Midwest snow

Airlines canceled 6,067 flights on Sunday and Monday amid a large snowstorm that has hit major cities in the Midwest and upper Northeast, according to the website FlightAware.com. 

As much as 20 inches of snow fell Sunday night and early Monday morning in major Midwest cities like Chicago and Detroit, according to Weather.com. Areas of upstate New York and Pennsylvania also received between 6 and 9 inches of snow. 

The FlightAware website said airlines canceled 2,960 flights that were scheduled for Sunday, in addition to the 3,107 Monday in response to the storm, which has been dubbed “Winter Storm Linus.” Another 2,718 flights Monday were delayed because of the storm, according to the site.

{mosads}The leading airport for cancellations on Monday was Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, which had 387 outgoing and 399 inbound flights canceled. 

Newark Liberty International, Boston’s Logan Airport and New York’s LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports rounded out the top five on the flight cancellation list Monday.
