Amtrak restoring Northeast Corridor service Monday

Amtrak announced late Sunday that it will restore full service along the Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington, D.C., on Monday morning.

Service has been suspended since a fatal derailment late Tuesday near Philadelphia.

“The safety of our passengers and crew remains our number one priority. Our infrastructure repairs have been made with the utmost care and emphasis on infrastructure integrity including complete compliance with Federal Railroad Administration directives,” Amtrak President and chief executive Joe Boardman said in a statement. “Amtrak staff and crew have been working around the clock to repair the infrastructure necessary to restore service for all the passengers who travel along the Northeast Corridor.”

{mosads}The lead investigator into Train 188’s crash, meanwhile, said on Sunday that his team has ruled nothing out in its search for the cause of the crash.

“We have not ruled anything out, nor have we ruled anything in,” National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) member Robert Sumwalt told host Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday.”

“We’re looking at everything at this point,” he added.

Sumwalt said NTSB investigators will meet with FBI agents on Monday to discuss their probe for projectile strikes at the accident site.

Sumwalt downplayed the possibility that a projectile might have contributed to the derailment.

“We interviewed the dispatchers, and we listened to the dispatch tape, and we heard no communications at all from the Amtrak engineer to the dispatch center to say something had struck the train,” he said on ABC.

“Nothing at all that he reported to the dispatch center,” he said of the train’s engineer, Brandon Bostian.

Eight passengers were killed, and more than 200 people were hurt when the Train 188 derailed while traveling at a high rate of speed through a turn.
