Washington’s Metrorail system on Thursday finalized its massive track-work maintenance plan, which will start next month and is expected to cause major service disruptions for nearly a year.
The effort, known as “SafeTrack,” will officially begin June 4 with 13 straight days of continuous single-tracking along the Orange and Silver lines between Ballston and East Falls Church, according to a news release.
{mosads}That project originally had been scheduled for November, but officials had to make last-minute tweaks to their plan following urgent safety recommendations doled out earlier this month by the Federal Transit Administration in order to mitigate smoke and fire threats.
SafeTrack accelerates three years’ worth of work into approximately one year. Officials have been scrambling to tackle ongoing safety issues and restore reliability and rider confidence.
The plan will involve single-tracking, partial shutdowns and reduced late-night service. Buses will be available during the shutdowns, but officials have warned that peak-hour fares will not be adjusted during maintenance projects.
Riders are being encouraged to familiarize themselves with Metro’s maintenance schedule and seek alternative routes.
