DC Metro to install free WiFi at all stations

Free WiFi is coming to Washington’s Metrorail system.

Metro general manager Paul Wiedefeld has approved a plan to install public-access WiFi at all underground Metro stations, the transit agency announced Tuesday.

The rollout will begin in the summer of 2017, with 60 percent of underground stations online by the end of the year. The rest of the stations will be completed in 2018.

{mosads}Tuesday’s announcement comes after a pilot program that tested free public Wi-Fi will at six Metro stations: Metro Center, Gallery Place, Judiciary Square, Union Station, Archives and L’Enfant Plaza.

The program saw positive rider feedback, according to a Metro spokesman, and the original pilot stations continue to have uninterrupted WiFi service.

“We are listening to our customers’ ideas about ways to improve their experience riding Metro,” Wiedefeld said in a statement about the pilot program this summer. “Having free access to Wi-Fi while on the platforms at Metrorail stations will allow customers to stay better connected while they travel.”
