News bites: Profits and mergers

American Airlines earned a $220 million profit in the second quarter of 2013.

{mosads}American is promising that Miami will remain a central hub once its merger with U.S. Airways is complete.

Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways are still struggling to complete their merger.

New York City is increasing service on its Long Island Railroad.
