Uber expects to deliver 15M trips on NYE

Uber expects to deliver 15 million trips this New Year’s Eve in more than 450 cities around the world, the ride-hailing firm announced in a blog post Friday.

That figure is three times the number of rides completed last year, when drivers completed 5 million trips on New Year’s Eve.

Since 2014, Uber has partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Drivers to help reduce drunk driving and get people home safely, especially around the holidays. The company is urging people take a pledge to #LeaveTheKeys at home and take an Uber instead.

{mosads}“With on-demand rides that go from door-to-door, you can ditch your keys — and the hassle of looking for parking,” Uber said in a blog post.

But the company also warned users that Sunday should be one of its busiest nights of the year, with fares likely to be the highest between midnight and 3 a.m. as people head home for the evening.

Uber faced backlash in 2013 when some passengers were caught off guard by high fares from surge pricing. This year, however, Uber has already changed its model to show upfront pricing instead of the surge multiplier, which may help reduce sticker shock.
