FBI: Suspect went to Fla. to carry out ‘horrific attack’

The FBI said Saturday that the suspected gunman who killed five and wounded eight others during a shooting at the airport in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., went to the city to carry out the “horrific attack.”

Authorities have not been able to determine the motive of the alleged shooter, Esteban Santiago, and have found “no specific reason” why he chose the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, according to ABC News.

“Indications are that he came here to carry out this horrific attack,” said George Piro, the FBI’s special agent responsible for the bureau’s Miami field office, according to ABC News.

Santiago flew from Anchorage, Alaska, to Minneapolis, Minn., before changing planes for Florida, according to the report.

After arriving in Fort Lauderdale, the suspect opened fire in the baggage claim area of the airport and did not attempt to take hostages, authorities said.

Piro pointed out that in November, Santiago voluntarily turned himself into the FBI office in Anchorage, which turned him over to the local police. Local law enforcement officials then took Santiago to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.
